A problem people bring · solved

Keep my savings worth something

You can hold part of your savings in a dollar stablecoin like USDC, in your own wallet or a family Safe that needs two of three signatures to spend. Spend it straight from a stablecoin card such as Tria so you never convert back at a bad rate. Split across two issuers for extra safety. Skip these: yield promises you do not understand.

Chapter 1

Who knew?

the bits nobody tells you
Oh! #1
A 2 of 3 family Safe is a savings jar that protects against both theft and an impulsive withdrawal.
Safe requires several owners to approve any spend.
Oh! #2
You can spend dollar savings directly with a stablecoin card instead of converting back at a bad rate.
Stablecoin cards such as Tria convert at the point of sale.
Oh! #3
Splitting savings across two stablecoin issuers reduces the damage if one has a problem.
Each stablecoin depends on its own issuer's reserves.
Oh! #4
Holding USDC in your own wallet earns nothing, and that is a feature: no lender is using your money.
Yield products lend or invest your deposit, which adds risk.
People assume

You need a foreign bank account or to buy physical dollars on the street.

Actually

A wallet is free and holding USDC costs nothing. Buying it usually costs about 1 to 2 percent in spread, so check the quote, and a Safe costs cents of gas to create on an L2. Stablecoin cards charge their own fees, often including an FX fee of a few percent.

Questions

Does USDC protect me from inflation?

USDC protects against your local currency falling against the dollar, not against the dollar's own inflation.

Is a family Safe safe for savings?

A Safe removes single-key theft, but it still carries issuer, smart contract and key-loss risk, so keep only what you can secure.

Can I earn interest on USDC?

Some platforms offer yield on USDC but add lending and hacking risk, and this page does not recommend any of them.

Is holding USDC legal in my country?

Rules on holding USDC and foreign currency vary widely, so check your local laws before you start.
